As for the other three Oscars: ---------- Introduced by Jim Carrey: "In the collaborative art of filmmaking,
the Cinematographer is often the most important unsung hero. Let me tell you what these artists do. The Cinematographer becomes
the painter of the film, mixing light, lenses, camera movement, film processing, and digital technology, all of which helps
set the context for films' mood--telling the story cimematically. This year five Cinematographers nominated by their peers
represent the best." The Oscar for Best Cinematography goes to John Toll for BRAVEHEART: Thank you
very much for making me a part of BRAVEHEART... a wonderful cast... a great crew... assistant director David Tomlin... and
on behalf of all of us, thank you very much. ---------- Introduced by Alicia Silverstone: "When you're on location
sitting on a folding chair at 5:00 am staring at your reflection in a coffee urn, your fate is probably in the hands of a
makeup artist. Whether it's improving on reality or creating a fantasy, through the years the wizards of makeup have dazzled
us with their powers of transformation. Using special wigs, facial extensions and an array of waxes, powders and brushes,
a makeup artist sculpts a rich world of amazing effects and believable characters. From aging an actor 30 years to sewing
stitches, makeup artists provide an amazing tour de force of Hollywood invention and creativity." The Oscar
for Best Makeup goes to Peter Frampton, Paul Pattison, and Lois Burwell for BRAVEHEART: PF: Well, just a few words
of thanks. First of course to Mel for making such a fabulous film which got all our work notices. And a few absent friends
in the make-up bus who can't be here this evening: to Amanda Knight, the best assistant anyone could have; to Berel Lerman,
my other assistant; to Francesca Crowder and Susan Love in the hair department. And on another note, all the Irish boys and
girls that for months slaughtered people in the field of battle, up to their necks in mud and bullets. Slightly more personal
note, BRAVEHEART has been my last film, after 28 years. I take this with great honor and pride back to Australia. ----------
The Oscar for Best Sound Effects Editing goes to Lon Bender and Per Hallberg for BRAVEHEART:
LB: Thank you, I believe the greatest gift you can ever give or get in life is to live, work and grow up among people
who believe in you. You can do basically anything, so I just wanted to thank my family in Sweden and all my friends and Icon
Productions, Paramount Studios, Karen Baker and the great people who put this all together for us. Thank you. PH:
I'd like to thank my friends and family, and especially my partner Wylie Stateman, and the staff whose commitment to excellence
has made this possible. This award is emblematic of the struggle of people everywhere to achieve something special in their
working lives, and it's an honor to that devotion, and I'd like to thank everyone involved with this picture.
Ok, so these pictures aren't from The Oscars... But I thought Mel looked so adorable in a kilt that I just had to share!!!!
